Item#: 2694 Buddhist Altar Frontal
Item#: 2694 Buddhist Altar Frontal
Location; Japan
Date; early to mid Edo period (1603-1800)
Description; A rare and unusual Japanese Buddhist altar frontal. I have not seen any other extant examples of such an antique textile: this example consists basically of a layout of seven adjacent triangular uchishiki that are embroidered on the same hand-spun and woven linen backing. Silk floss embroidery, couching, and standard embroidery. Fair condition: the three most central uchishiki sections are in good condition, while the others on either side – about half of the textile – have severe condition problems, mainly due to extreme wear (including wear holes) and many loose threads. 86″ x 20″
